My first month freelancing in Chennai
2025-02-144 min readdev
Four weeks in. No clients yet. A lot of cold emails. Here's what I learned about going solo in a city that runs on referrals.
The Chennai reality
Chennai's tech scene is tight-knit. Everyone knows everyone. Job boards exist, but the real opportunities come from "someone who knows someone." As a newcomer to freelancing, that network doesn't build overnight.
What I tried
- Cold outreach — Sent 50+ emails. Response rate: 4%. Not great, but one of those turned into a real conversation.
- Twitter/X — Shared what I'm building. Got a few DMs. Nothing concrete yet.
- Local meetups — Attended two. Met interesting people. No direct leads, but the vibe was encouraging.
The mindset shift
I stopped measuring success by "clients landed" and started measuring by "conversations started." One good conversation is worth more than ten ignored emails.
Next month
More meetups. More building in public. Maybe a small product to show what I can do. We'll see.
